Welcome to our research study
We are now recruiting stand-ins to be last minute participants for an MRI experiment investigating the brain regions involved in attention to emotional thoughts. We are looking for adults to take part in our brain scanning experiment taking place on campus. The study will involve an initial 20/30 minutes phase taking place at Pevensey I, involving questionnaires and behavioural task, followed by a scanning session which will take place at CISC (Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre), lasting approximately 1 hour/1 hour and 15 min. For taking part, you will be reimbursed £15 and offered an image of your own brain!
During the scanning session you would be asked to look at and think about one gruesome, and negative, image. Please consider whether you would find this aspect of the study distressing and do not sign up if this is the case.
Before you can take part you will need to return an fMRI safety questionnaire to us, which will be emailed to you after entering your details into the form below.
Please note you may only participate if you satisfy a number of critera, including but not limited to:
-Fluent English speaker -Aged 18-35 -Right-handed. -Normal or corrected-to-normal vision
-Able to experience visual mental imagery -Not pregnant
Sign up to be added to the stand-in contact list
We will first contact in advance to fill out the MRI safety form and set up a short Zoom meeting to check you are fine with the type of stimulus you will be shown in the scanner.
Then, depending on your avilability we will contact you on the day to offer you a chance to take part.
You mav need to be ready with half an hour's notice.
The fMRI session will first take place in Pevensey I building on Campus. Sessions last 90/105 minutes.
If you have any further questions, please fill out the form and add vour question to the availabilitv box.
This experiment is designed to investigate which brain regions are involved in processing certain imagery. During the experiment you will lie inside the MRI scanner while we show you many images. One of the images depicts physical harm. If you would like to proceed with the experiment you will be shown an equivalent image before taking part, to check you are comfortable proceeding.
If you do choose to take part, you will be added to a list of people we can contact when we have a cancellation. The fMRI machine has to be booked at great cost, and so we are hugely grateful to last minute stand-ins. In the instance of a cancellation or no-show, we will send a text message to everyone who indicated they may be available at that time. The slot will be given to the first responder.
If we offer you a slot, you will visit us at CISC. We will check again that you have no metal on your body, then invite you to begin the experiment. After participating, you will be given £15 for your time and offered an image of your brain.
This CISC MRI safety questionnaire will be emailed to you when you sign up.
